PM Modi pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on birth anniversary at Rajghat

New Delhi, Oct 2 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on the latter's birth anniversary, also known as Gandhi Jayanti, at Rajghat in the national capital on Tuesday.

Paying respect to the late freedom fighter, Modi tweeted, "The noble thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi have given strength to millions across the world. He was a stalwart who lived for others and to make our world a better place. Paid tributes to Bapu at Rajghat this morning. #Gandhi150"

President Ram Nath Kovind also paid tribute to Gandhi at the same place. Tweeting some pictures, the President said: " #PresidentKovind paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on Gandhi Jayanti"

Paying respect to the Gandhi, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said in a tweet, "Performing Parikrama to the samadhi of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his Birth Anniversary today at the Rajghat in Delhi. #MahathmaGandhi #GandhiJayanti"

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or Mahatma Gandhi, primarily a social activist, led the Indian independence movement against the British colonial government, which ruled India for nearly a century.

The birthday of Gandhi, who used to believed in peace and non-violence, is also celebrated by the United Nations as the International Day of Non Violence to honour the Father of the Nation.

Congress' former and present Presidents, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, respectively, also paid tribute to Gandhi at Rajghat on Tuesday.
