Opposition demands release of former Jammu and Kashmir CMs, sends resolution to BJP govt

New Delhi/IBNS: Eight opposition parties sent a resolution to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led union government demanding an immediate release of three former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Ministers, Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, who are kept under detention since Aug 5 when the Centre scrapped Article 370, media reports said.

The resolution stated as quoted by NDTV, under the Modi government "democratic dissent is being muzzled by coercive administrative action, which has threatened the basic ideals of Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity as enshrined in our Constitution".

The opposition parties which have sent the resolution include the Left and Trinamool Congress (TMC).

On Aug 5, the Modi government scrapped Articles 370 and 35A withdrawing the special status which Jammu and Kashmir used to enjoy since Independence.

Also the government had bifurcated then state Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Farooq and Omar Abdullah as well as Mufti were later slapped with Public Safety Act (PSA).

The PSA allows one to be detained for three months with multiple extensions.
