Omar decides to discontinue as J&K caretaker CM
Srinagar, Jan 8 (IBNS): Omar Abdullah has decided to not continue as the caretaker Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and said the state needs a full-time administrator to deal with the situation along the border with Pakistan.
"Just to confirm I did meet Gov Vohra sahib last night & ask him to relieve me as caretaker CM. I had agreed to stay temporarily. I had assumed govt formation would be a matter of a week or 10. Today we seem even further away from that goal than we were 10 days ago," Abdullah tweeted on Thursday.
"Given the situation on the border with 10,000 displaced, the hardships of winter & the continuing need for relief for flood affected. I believe the interests of the state will only be served by a full time administrator & not a caretaker with no mandate to govern," he argued.
After he tendered his resignation following the defeat of his party National Conference (NC) in the recently concluded Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections, Abdullah was asked by state Governor to continue as a caretaker chief minister of the state until the new government is formed.
Following the hung mandate of the Jammu and Kashmir people, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been in touch with both NC and PDP for government formation but nothing concrete has emerged so far to break the deadlock.
The state is now heading towards a President's rule, said reports.
"It is now for the @jkpdp to explain to the people that with 28 MLAs & offers of support from 2 other parties why the state has central rule," Abdullah said.
The new government in the state is required to be formed before Jan 19 when the term of the current Assembly expires.
The poll result from the recently concluded Jammu and Kashmir election saw BJP winning 25 seats, Omar Abdullah's National Conference winning 15, Indian National Congress winning 12 seats, and the PDP winning the highest number of 28 seats in the 87 member assembly. Seven seats were won by others, including Independents.
