Earlier, Modi had invited Obama as the Chief Guest at the Republic Day next year.

“This Republic Day, we hope to have a friend over.. . invited President Obama to be the 1st US President to grace the occasion as Chief Guest” said the Prime Minister in a statement.

In India, Republic Day commemorates the date (Jan 26, 1950) on which the Constitution of India came into force replacing the Government of India Act 1935 as the governing document of the country.
