Guwahati, Jan 5 (IBNS) : A local court in Meghalaya on Wednesday issued non-bailable warrant against a legislator in connection with a rape case.

According to reports, the district sessions court issued non-bailable warrant against Independent MLA Julius Dorphang, who has been accused of raping a 14-year old girl.

The court issued the  warrent after the legislator failed  to appear before the investigating officer.

Dorphang, the former rebel leader of the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council ( HNLC) and now supporting the Mukul Sangma- led government, was hiding after police registered a case against him.

"We have registered a case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against Julius Dorphang for his involvement in sexually exploiting the minor," Shillong City SP Vivek Syiem said.,

The case was registered at Laitumkhrah Police Station in the city and Dorphang was booked under section 366 (A), section 3 (a)/4 of the POCSO Act and  section 5 of Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act of IPC.

The incident of sexual exploitation came to light last month after a waiter at a guest house owned by Meghalaya Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh’s son was arrested for trafficking the victim.

Two civil society groups had asked Meghalaya police to issue a red alert notice against the legislator and also demanded resignation of state home minister HDR Lyngdoh as his son's guest house was used for sexual exploitation.
