NIA team attacked in Bengal three months after Sandeshkhali incident

Kolkata/IBNS: A team of terror-probe agency, NIA, was attacked in West Bengal's East Midnapore district on Saturday morning, similar to an incident that occurred in Sandeshkhali three months ago, media reports said.

One NIA officer was injured in East Midnapore's Bhupatinagar when the team was attacked during a raid.

The NIA was on the task to probe into a blast which took place in the region in 2022.

The officers, who were conducting the search operation, were confronted by a mob, which went on to attack them and also cause damage to vehicles.

The villagers surrounded the vehicle and started pelting stones causing an injury to an officer.

Three people were killed in a blast which took place in Bhupatinagar on December 3, 2022.

Slamming the Mamata Banerjee government, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT Cell head Amit Malviya posted on X, "West Bengal continues to remain lawless, as ever, under Mamata Banerjee’s misrule. After attack on ED officials, now another central agency has come under attack. A team of NIA officers, which went to Bhupatinagar in East Medinipur District of West Bengal, to arrest two TMC leaders, were targeted.

"100/150 villagers, not only stopped the NIA team from arresting the accused, but also hurled stones at their vehicles. This wouldn’t have been possible without local police’s involvement. All criminals in Bengal, from Shahjahan Sheikh to Anubroto Mondal, enjoy TMC’s protection."

Hitting back at the BJP, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh posted on X, "The incident is not desirable but it has happened due to the politics and instigation by the BJP. It's a natural outburst of people who knew BJP leaders handed over lists of TMC leaders to the NIA."

On January 5, 2024, the ED officers were attacked by a mob after they went on to raid erstwhile Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan in connection with the ration distribution scam.

Shahjahan's aides allegedly assaulted and chased the ED officers turning the area into a political hotspot months ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
