Nepal quake: Death toll crosses 2200

According to the  United States Geological Survey, the aftershocks measured 6.7 in the Richter scale.

"Another Earth quake occurred today of 6.8 magnitude around 12.39 pm IST (Indian Standard Time) at a depth of 10 Km with its Epicentral Region located in Nepal about 65 Km east of Kathmandu. Its Latitude and Longitude are 27.71 N and 85.91 E respectively," the Indian government said in a statement.

The epicenter of Sunday's quake was Kodari, around 80 km east of Kathmandu.

Amid fresh quake, rescue works continued in Nepal.

Aftershocks were also felt in UP, Bihar, Punjab, Assam and West Bengal.

Apart from Delhi, tremors were also felt in Lucknow and Kolkata.

In Bihar, the tremors went on for several minutes, reports said.

Metro services were also disrupted in Kolkata and Delhi following the tremors.

Meanwhile, 62 people have been killed in India so far with Bihar recording the highest number of casualties.

"Total 57 people have lost their lives in India, 262 people are reported to be injured, 56 houses/ buildings fully damaged and 248 houses/ buildings partially damaged," the Union Ministry said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a follow-up meeting on Sunday to review the progress of relief and rescue operations following the major earthquake on Saturday.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need for further increasing the pace of search and rescue operations, and evacuation of stranded people from Nepal. Modi directed that in addition to the air route, the road route should also be used for evacuating stranded people at the earliest.

He stressed on the need for ensuring coordination among various agencies involved in relief and rescue operations.

Earlier in the morning, the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh reviewed the ongoing rescue & relief operations.

Singh spoke to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Akhilesh Yadav and the Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Nitish Kumar and asked them to mobilise a fleet of buses and ambulances to rescue people stranded in Nepal.

The Union Home Minister also instructed the SSB to set up camps along the border to provide medical help to tourists crossing India Nepal border.

As of now, ten teams of NDRF are pressed into action and six more teams will be dispatched to earthquake affected areas in Nepal.

Singh has instructed the Bureau of Immigration to give ‘gratis visas’ to all foreign tourists stranded in Nepal who are coming to India.

Four National Disaster Response Force teams have been deployed, one each in Gopalganj, Motihari, Supaul and Darbhanga Districts of Bihar and one Team deployed in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

"A total 62 people have lost their lives in India, 259 people are reported to be injured, 56 houses/ buildings fully damaged and 248 houses/ buildings partially damaged," read the statement.

A team of 31 Medical Staff – 13 Doctors and 18 paramedics with 2 tonnes of essential medicines dispatched. 4.5 tonnes of Food and 4.5 tonnes of Medicines were dispatched today. 40 tonnes of water, 100 stretchers and 35,000 food packets were also dispatched.

The government has enhanced compensation to people affected by earthquake in India.

"The next of kin of those who lost their lives in various parts of the country due to the earthquake yesterday, shall receive an enhanced compensation of Rs. 4 lakh from the National Disaster Relief Fund. This follows the Union Government's decision to revise the guidelines for the National Disaster Relief Fund, and raise this compensation amount from Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. 4 lakh, in the event of death due to natural calamity," the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.

"The above amount is in addition to the compensation of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the next of kin of those killed. A compensation of Rs. 50,000 has also been announced for the seriously injured," it said.

Meanwhile, 1050 Indians have been evacuated from Nepal in six IAF flights,officials said.

An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale devastated Nepal on Saturday.

The quake pulled down buildings, temples and towers, felled trees and electric posts and left yawning cracks on roads across Nepal, specially in Kathmandu, the capital.

The historic Dharara Tower built in the 19th century in Kathmandu was also collapsed.
