Navjot Singh Sidhu seeks more time to surrender citing health reasons

New Delhi/IBNS: Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was sentenced to a year's rigorous imprisonment for a 1988 road rage case causing the death of a person, has urged the judiciary to provide him a few more weeks to surrender owing to his health problem.

According to media reports, his lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, also a senior Congress leader, was asked by the judge to move Chief Justice of India NV Ramana for the permission.

Sidhu had tweeted earlier that he would surrender to "the majesty of law".

The Supreme Court Thursday sentenced  Sidhu to one-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) in the 1988 road rage case that led to the death of one Gurnam Singh.

In 2018, the apex court had acquitted the cricketer-turned-politician of homicide charges but convicted him for voluntarily causing hurt to the victim.

In Sept 2018, the top court gave its assent to consider a plea seeking a review of its May 15, 2018 order.

Sidhu has to surrender before the court.

The case involves charges that Sidhu had beaten Gurnam Singh on his head, causing his death on Dec 27, 1988.
