Narendra Modi in Sri Lanka: PM meets top leaders during first visit after LS polls victory

Colombo, June 9 (IBNS): Visiting Sri Lanka, Prime MInister Narendra Modi met top leaders of the nation, including President Maithripala Sirisena here on Sunday.

The two leaders discussed bilateral issues of mutual interest during their meeting.

MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted: "Reinforcing partnership PM @narendramodi and President of Sri Lanka @MaithripalaS discussed bilateral issues of mutual interest. A banquet was hosted in honour of PM by President @MaithripalaS #Neighbourhoodfirst."

Narendra Modi became the first world leader to visit the Island Nation since the Easter Sunday attacks which left 253 people killed.

Modi also met leader of opposition and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa during this visit.

"Leader of Opposition and former President @PresRajapaksa called on PM @narendramodi. Discussed steps to further strengthen wide ranging bilateral relations between the two countries," Kumar said.

Tamil National Alliance delegation led by R. Sampanthan also met Modi and congratulated him over the victory in the Lok Sabha polls.

Modi reached Sri Lanka from Maldives.

This was his first foreign tours since registering a victory in the polls.
