Ranchi/IBNS: Two people were killed and 20 others injured after a Mumbai-bound train derailed in Jharkhand, bringing back the scanner on the Railway Ministry which has faced flak over a number of accidents in recent times.

Eighteen coaches of the Howrah-Mumbai train derailed at Badabamboo, which is 80 kilometers away from Jamshedpur, at 3:45 am.

Out of 18 coaches, 16 were passenger coaches, one power car and one pantry.

Rescue teams are on the spot. The rescue operation is underway.

Several trains have either been cancelled or diverted.

The Opposition parties have slammed the government as the latest derailment is the third such incident in two months.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh posted on X, "Yet another railway accident. But the PR machine of the Fail Minister continues. In June and July 2024 alone, the Fail Minister has overseen three accidents that have cumulatively cost 17 Indians their lives and left 100s injured."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted on X, "Another disastrous rail accident! Howrah- Mumbai mail derails in Chakradharpur division in Jharkhand today early morning, multiple deaths and huge number of injuries are the tragic consequences.

"I seriously ask: is this governance? This series of nightmares almost every week, this unending procession of deaths and injuries on railway tracks: for how long shall we tolerate this? Will there be no end to the callousness of Government of India?! My heart goes out to the bereaved families, condolences to the next of kin."
