New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who days ago announced his retirement from international cricket, has been important illustrations of "New India'' where "family does not decide young people's destiny".

Putting all speculations over his cricketing future to rest, Dhoni on Aug 15 announced his retirement, ending his illustrious career of close to 16 years.

Writing a letter to Dhoni, Modi, who is known to challenge the dynasty politics, has written, "Looking at you as just a sportsperson would be injustice. The correct way to assess your impact is as a phenomenon!"

'Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shair Hoon': MS Dhoni bids adieu to international cricket

"Rising from humble beginnings in a small town, you burst onto the national scene, made a name for yourself and most importantly made India proud.

"Your rise and conduct thereafter gives strength and inspiration to crores of youngsters who like you have not been to cushy schools or colleges, neither do they belong to illustrious families but they have the talent to distinguish themselves at the highest levels."

He added, "You have been one of the important illustrations of the spirit of New India, where family name does not make young people's destiny but they make their own names and their own destinies."

Thanking the PM, Dhoni wrote on Twitter, "An Artist,Soldier and Sportsperson what they crave for is appreciation, that their hard work and sacrifice is getting noticed and appreciated by everyone. Thanks PM @narendramodi for your appreciation and good wishes."

After the 2019 Cricket World Cup, where he was criticised for slow batting, Dhoni took a long sabbatical from cricket and went on to train with the Indian personnel in Kashmir.

India's semifinal match against New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup was the last occasion where Dhoni went out to play for the national team wearing the jersey number seven.

However, the 'Captain Cool' will play the 13th edition of Indian Premier League- a mega T20 cricket tournament- which will be held in UAE between September and November this year.
