Modi-Trump meet back in focus as report hints at G7 sidelines talks in France

New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France on June 16-17, according to a report by The Hindu.

Trump has already confirmed his participation in the summit, which will be hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

If the meeting takes place, it will mark the first interaction between Modi and Trump since February 2025, when the Indian Prime Minister visited the United States.

Modi's France Visit

Modi's visit to France is scheduled in two phases. The first leg will take place on June 13-14, followed by the second phase from June 16-19.

During the visit, the Prime Minister is expected to meet French President Emmanuel Macron in Nice on June 14.

Trump Signals Progress on Trade Deal

The anticipated Modi-Trump meeting comes amid ongoing discussions over a bilateral trade agreement.

Days earlier, Trump expressed confidence that a trade deal between India and the United States would be finalised soon. He also praised Modi, describing him as a "good friend."

"I like your Prime Minister a lot. He is a good friend of mine, and we get along well. We have a good relationship," Trump told reporters at the White House.

Tariff Concerns Loom

The U.S. President also reiterated his long-standing criticism of India's tariff regime, claiming that India had benefited from high trade barriers in its relationship with the United States for years.

His remarks come at a time when the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has proposed imposing additional duties of up to 12.5 percent on imports from several countries, including India, over concerns related to the enforcement of restrictions on goods allegedly produced using forced labour.

The proposed measures have added a fresh layer of complexity to ongoing trade negotiations between New Delhi and Washington.
