New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met national security advisers and senior security officials from BRICS countries, highlighting the bloc's growing role in addressing global security challenges.

During the meeting, Modi emphasized the need for closer cooperation among BRICS members on issues including terrorism, cybersecurity and emerging technologies, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.

The prime minister said BRICS has an important role to play in strengthening collaboration on key security issues as geopolitical and technological challenges continue to evolve.

Modi also outlined priorities for India's upcoming chairmanship of the grouping, saying New Delhi would focus on advancing practical cooperation among member states and promoting the interests of the Global South.

"India's Chairmanship will seek to advance practical cooperation, support the priorities of the Global South and contribute to a safer, more secure and inclusive world," Modi said in a post on X following the meeting.

The discussions come as BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, along with newer members, seeks to expand its influence on global governance, economic cooperation and security issues.

Modi reaffirmed India's commitment to working with BRICS partners to address common challenges and strengthen cooperation in areas critical to international peace and security.
