Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, with the two leaders backing a more representative and multipolar global order.

Guterres congratulated Modi on India assuming the BRICS chairship for the fourth time during their meeting.

The two leaders underscored the importance of multipolarity and stressed the need to reform multilateral institutions, including the United Nations Security Council, to better reflect contemporary global realities.

Conflicts, maritime security on agenda

Modi and Guterres discussed a range of pressing international issues, including ongoing conflicts and the importance of freedom of navigation and maritime security.

The discussions come amid heightened geopolitical tensions and growing concerns over disruptions to key maritime routes and global trade.

The leaders also exchanged views on broader global challenges and the need for effective multilateral cooperation.

AI, renewable energy and food security discussed

The meeting also covered issues linked to sustainable development and emerging technologies.

Modi and Guterres discussed human-centric artificial intelligence, progress in renewable energy and global food security.

The emphasis on these areas comes as countries grapple with the twin challenges of technological transformation and sustainable development while dealing with geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

Modi wishes Guterres ahead of end of tenure

At the conclusion of the meeting, Modi wished Guterres the very best for the remainder of his tenure as UN Secretary-General.

The meeting took place as global leaders gathered in New Delhi for the BRICS Summit, with reform of international institutions and a more representative multilateral system among the broader issues dominating discussions.
