Meghalaya : Angry mob torch police station after police firing leaves three injured
According to the reports, the violence erupted in the Kaldang area after policemen posted at a checkpoint fired at a vehicle when the driver refused to stop and tried to flee.
In the firing three persons were injured.
Following the incident, an angry mob attacked the police team and burnt down the Resubelpara police station, its temporary barracks and vehicles.
A top official of Meghalaya police said that, the police team was engaged in keeping vigil following the intelligence input about movement of militants in the area. .
The injured persons were rushed to Guwahati for better treatment.
The situation was brought under control with the deployment of security forces in the area.
On March 5, a most wanted criminal, William Sangma and his three aides managed a narrow escape through a police checkpoint at Thapa Darenchi in the hilly district.
Security personnel later recovered arms and ammunition from a vehicle, which Sangma had abandoned near a roadside field.
Militants including those belonging to ULFA (I) and GNLA are active in the Garo Hills districts which also witnessed in the past crimes, including kidnapping and extortion.
