Mamata Banerjee wishes people of Bangladesh on Independence Day

Kolkata, Mar 26 (IBNS/UNI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday wished people of Bangladesh on Independence Day.

She tweeted: " Wishing all my brothers and sisters in Bangladesh a very happy Independence Day."

The day is observed as Independence Day to commemorate the fact that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared long-sought-after independence, marking the birth of the nation of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh achieved its liberation after a prolonged struggle with the political and army leadership of West Pakistan after the latter refused to acknowledge its democratic popularity proved in the 1970 war.

The suppression led to a horrific civil war in erstwhile East Pakistan in which several thousands were killed and attained international focus. It was India led by Indira Gandhi who came to Dhaka's rescue by taking on the West Pakistani army, leading to the third Indo-Pak war since independence.
The Independence Day of Bangladesh is a national holiday. It commemorates the country's declaration of independence from Pakistan. It is celebrated on March 26 each year.

The holiday is marked by memorial ceremonies to remember those who lost their lives in the war for independence.

Independence Day is commonly associated with parades, political speeches, fairs, concerts, and ceremonies to celebrate the history and traditions of Bangladesh. The main streets are decorated with national flags. Television and radio stations broadcast special programs and patriotic songs.

The Independence Day Award is the highest state award given by the Government of Bangladesh.
