Mamata Banerjee requests northeastern states to reject NPR

Kolkata/IBNS: Weeks after putting all works related to the National Population Register (NPR) on hold, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday appealed to all northeastern states, including the ones ruled by her arch-rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to reject the National Population Register (NPR).

"I will appeal to all North-Eastern states including Tripura, Assam, Manipur, and Arunachal that before taking any decision about NPR, they must see the law properly and I request them not to participate in this," Banerjee said.

Earlier the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief had said, "Initially we thought it (Centre) is doing Census. When we realised that the Centre is doing NRC in the name of NPR, we stopped it."

Though Banerjee is spearheading the campaign against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and NPR, she skipped the Jan 13 Opposition meeting which was called by Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi.

Apart from Banerjee, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has also put all works related to NPR on hold.

Both the Chief Ministers consider NPR as the stepping stone for the NRC.

The Left has maintained that it is in favour of Census but not NPR.

Visiting Kolkata last week, senior Congress MP P Chidambaram said, "NPR is NRC in disguise."

He also urged all Opposition parties which are fighting against the contentious CAA to unite.
