Maldives says decision on Article 370 is an "internal matter" of India

Male (Maldives), Aug 7 (UNI) The Maldives government on Wednesday termed Government of India's decision to scrap Article 370 of the Constitution vis-a-vis the state of Jammu and Kashmir as an internal matter of India.

"We believe that it is the right of every sovereign nation to amend their laws as required," a statement by the Maldives government said.

The provisions of Article 370 granting special state status to Jammu and Kashmir stands inoperative with the President Ram Nath Kovind giving his assent.

The notification signed by the President, states, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (3) of Article 370 read with clause (1) of Article 370 of the Constitution of India, the President, on the recommendation of Parliament, is pleased to declare that, as from August 6, 2019, all clauses of the said Article 370 shall cease to be operative...".

The Rajya Sabha gave its nod to the relevant bills on Monday while the House of the People

passed a statutory resolution removing Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and the J&K Reorganisation Bill, 2019 which bifurcates the state on Tuesday.
