Major diplomatic move: India’s envoy meets Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman in Dhaka, bilateral issues discussed

The Indian envoy met the Bangladeshi leader ahead of the country's Foreign Minister  Khalilur Rahman’s upcoming visit to New Delhi.

In an X post, the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh said: "High Commissioner Pranay Verma paid a courtesy call on Hon’ble Prime Minister H.E. Tarique Rahman on 6 April 2026. They discussed bilateral engagement with focus on people-centric cooperation in multiple domains aligned with the national development priorities of the two countries"

The Commission further said: "High Commissioner conveyed India’s intent to work together with the Government and people of Bangladesh by adopting a positive, constructive and forward-looking approach and based on mutual interest and mutual benefit."

Khalilur Rahman

Khalilur Rahman is going to be the first Bangladeshi cabinet minister to visit India since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party returned to power after winning the general polls recently.

According to local media reports, he will be accompanied in Delhi by the prime minister’s adviser on foreign affairs, Humayun Kabir.

"I am going to India before attending the Indian Ocean Conference. During the Delhi visit, I will meet India’s external affairs minister S Jaishankar and several other important government representatives. The discussions will focus on the future of relations between the two countries. We want a normal relationship with India based on mutual respect, dignity, and interests," Khalilur Rahman, foreign minister, told Prothom Alo.

Diplomatic sources told the newspaper that both countries said the foreign minister will leave Dhaka for Delhi on the afternoon of 7 April and depart for Port Louis from Delhi on 9 April. On the evening of 7 April, he will hold discussions with India’s National Security adviser Ajit Doval.

The relationship between India and Bangladesh had touched a low point following the fall of former PM Sheikh Hasina-led government in 2024 amid severe protests against her regime. Ties further deteriorated during the interim government's rule.
