Mumbai/IBNS : A day after Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar warned against a second lockdown amid rising Covid-19 cases, Amravati district administration clamped a week-long shutdown from Monday to control the spread of the infection, media reports said.

The Maharashtra government has been asserting the need to follow the Covid-19 rules and wearing masks while telling the people that the pandemic situation in the state is gradually worsening after months of improvement.

Cabinet Minister Yashomati Thakur while announcing the lockdown said only essential services will be allowed to function during the seven-day lockdown.

The lockdown will be extended if people do not adhere to safety rules and added that the decision to halt all non-essential activities was taken after coronavirus cases continued to rise in Maharashtra, the minister said.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar met the senior district administration officials to assess the Covid-19 situation in Amravati before the government’s decision.

The decision to place Amravati district under lockdown comes hours after the Pune district administration closed all schools and coaching centres till February 28.

Maharashtra government is also mulling night curfew and a decision would be taken after a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, state minister Vijay Wadettiwar said today, according to an NDTV report.

There has been a steady rise in coronavirus cases in Pune , Maharashtra, Amravati, Akola, Nagpur and Yavatmal districts and the administration in these districts have been asked to take a call on lockdown or other measures to arrest the spread of the infection, the minister added.

Dr Shashank Joshi, a member of Maharashtra's Covid-19 task force has told NDTV that the 240 new strains of coronavirus that have emerged across India are responsible for the surge in fresh infections.
