New Delhi, Oct 19 (IBNS): With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registering victories in the Assembly polls in Haryana and Maharashtra, Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi have accepted the 'verdict' delivered by the people in both the states.

In a statement, Sonia Gandhi said: "The Congress Party accepts the election verdict delivered by the people of Maharashtra and Haryana with humility and resolves to play a constructive and vigilant role."

"The people of Maharashtra and Haryana trusted us with their mandate thrice and twice respectively. We hope that the Parties forming the Government will fulfill the promises that they made," she said.

"We thank our supporters and voters for having stood by us, and our workers for their tireless and unstinting commitment to the party and its ideology," Sonia Gandhi said.

Rahul Gandhi, on the otherhand, said the party will work hard to win the confidence of the people.

"We accept the verdict of the people . People have voted for change, after 15 years of our government in Maharashtra and 10 years in Haryana. I congratulate the BJP on their success. I thank our supporters for having stood by us and the party workers for their commitment to the party. The Congress party will work hard on the ground to once again earn the confidence of the people," Rahul Gandhi said in a statement.

The BJP surged ahead in the key state of Maharashtra leading and winning in 123 seats in the 288 member assembly emerging as the single largest party though short of a clear majority, but is all set to form the next government in Haryana snatching it again from Congress by bagging almost 47 of the 90 seats.
