Lucknow/UNI/IBNS: Madhya Pradesh governor Lalji Tandon passed away on Tuesday.

He was 85.

President Ram Nath Kovind mourned his demise and tweeted: "In the passing away of Madhya Pradesh Governor Shri Lal Ji Tandon, we have lost a legendary leader who combined cultural sophistication of Lucknow and acumen of a national stalwart. I deeply mourn his death. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends."

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his grief over the demise Lalji Tandon and announced a three days state mourning as a mark of respect to the departed dignitary.

The former Lucknow MP died after a prolonged illness.

Adityanath in his statement said that Lalji Tandon was a popular leader and his death would create a vacuum in the state politics.

The CM also talked to Ashutosh Tandon, son of Lalji Tandon, who is also his cabinet colleague, to express his condolences.

Lalji Tandon had also been UP state minister several times.

He was admitted to Medanta hospital on June 11 after he complained of breathing problems, difficulty in urination and fever.

Last night too, the medical bulletin of the hospital said that the MP governor was critical. The MP governor was on the ventilator for the past two weeks.

Lalji Tandon's last rites will be performed at 1630 hours, his son informed.
