Lord Ganesha row: Social activists file complain against Ram Gopal Varma
Pune, Aug 31 (IBNS): In the wake of the controversial tweets by filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma on Lord Ganesha on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, political and social activists on Saturday filed police complaints against him, reports said.
Chief of the Mumbai unit of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Sumit Khambekar and social activist Shahzaad Poonawala filed separate complaints against Varma in Mumbai.
Khambekar told media persons that Varma's tweets "hurt the sentiments of a large number of Hindus, especially devotees of Lord Ganesh".
Varma on Friday created controversy with his series of tweets on Lord Ganesha on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi.
In a series of tweets, the director said: "Did Lord Ganesha have a paunch in his childhood too or did it develop in the recovery time of the elephant head operation?"
"Can someone explain how someone can cut off a child's head who was just trying to protect his mother's modesty? Am sure devotees know better," he posted.
He also tweeted: "Does Lord Ganesha eat much more than other Gods?
My doubt is becos all the other Gods are either trim or muscular."
Later, he apologized for his tweets and said he wants to gain knowledge about Lord Ganesha.
"All concerned pls undrstand tht my questions nd observations on Ganesha are coming from both my innocence nd ignorance on the subject matter," Varma tweeted.
He posted that: "All tweets I put on Ganesha were in my usual manner but unintended by me to hurt anyone's sentiments...but if they did I sincerely apologize."
He also said that his films are failing to become successful due to his attitude towards Gods.
"I think my films are flopping only becos of my attitude towards Gods. ..I wish I can become a devotee," the director posted.
