Lucknow: The law student who accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union Minister Chinmayanand of raping her has been taken into custody over charges of "extortion and blackmailing", media reports said.

The lawyers of Chinmayanand has filed a case alleging that the law student had sent a message on Whatsapp demanding Rs. 5 lakh. In the message, as the lawyers alleged, Chinmayanand was threatened to pay the amount or else the video clip shown by the law student would be made viral.

On last Friday, Chinmayanand was arrested and sent to jail for 14 days in connection with the rape case.

The woman, who was a second-year student of Chinmayanand's law college, accused him of sexually assaulting her for a year.

Earlier in her statements to Delhi Police and the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team(SIT), she described the sexual assault was carried out by the politician for one year and also handed over the videos.

She alleged in her complaint that Chinmayanand made a video of her while she was bathing in the institute's hostel and later used it to rape her.

As proof of her allegations against the politician, she, too, managed to make some videos of the assault and posted them on Facebook before running away from the institution.

The case came to the Supreme Court's notice after lawyers staged protests against the alleged crime.
