Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma tests positive for Covid-19

Kolkata/IBNS: Commissioner of the Kolkata Police force, Anuj Sharma, on Thursday tested positive for novel coronavirus and he is currently in home quarantine with mild symptoms, city police officials said.

According to sources in the Kolkata Police, swab sample of Anuj Sharma was sent for testing on Wednesday after the senior IPS official had developed mild symptoms and he was found to have contracted Covid-19.

City police officials said that Anuj Sharma was doing well and presently working from home.  

Sharma was last seen attending his office at Kolkata Police headquarters, Lalbazar, on Tuesday (Sept 8) and he joined the Police Day observance at the state secretariat  Nabanna later on that day.

Earlier, Kolkata Police's Joint Commissioner (Hdq) Subhankar Sinha Sarkar had tested positive for Covid-19 and he defeated the highly contagious virus from his home.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Police on Thursday reported its 10th Covid-19 fatality as Gautam Mahato, an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) posted in the Special Branch, succumbed to coronavirus in a private hospital near EM Bypass.

So far, over 2,100 Kolkata Police personnel have contracted Covid-19 and around 1,900 of them have been cured of the virus.

Meanwhile, with 3112 fresh infections and 41 Covid-19 related deaths reported in the last 24 hours, West Bengal's coronavirus tally on Thursday reached 1,93,175, including 23377 active cases, 3771 fatalities and 1,66,027 discharges.

According to a bulletin issued by Bengal Health and Family Welfare (WBHFW) department, in the past 24 hours, 3035 Covid-19 patients were discharged from different health facilities across the state, taking the recovery rate to 85.95 per cent from 85.76 per cent.

Officials said that West Bengal had tested 22,85,936 samples till date with 42642 tests conducted in 74 testing facilities in the state in the last 24 hours.

Presently, 2,451 persons are kept in government quarantine centres and 65,701 people are under home surveillance in the state while 1810 persons are in 200 government-run safe homes.
