Kolkata: Fire fighters battle to bring supermarket blaze under control
The fire broke out around 11:30 am on Sunday at the godown of Citi Mart which is located at the third floor of the Light House building.
The fire reached the other floors of the building soon.
Twenty nine fire tenders, disaster management group (DMG) and police force rushed to the spot to bring the blaze under control.
Three sky ladders and one drone were sent to the area. The DMG, police rescued all Citi Mart staffs from the building.
Fire minister Javed Ahmed Khan, ex-mayor of Kolkata Shovan Chatterjee went to the spot.
Fire fighters are fighting for last 6 hours to bring the flames under control.
After primary investigation, the DG of fire brigade, Sanjay Mukherjee told IBNS that the fire might have started due to short-circuit.
“After proper investigation we can tell the actual news of the fire,” he said.
No casualty has been reported so far.
But 12 fire fighters and two Citi Mart staffs felt breathing trouble due to heavy smoke.
The whole market has been completely gutted.
A fire tender team from Indian Army came to the spot with their latest equipment but they allegedly were not given opportunity to work. After waiting over 30 minutes, they left the spot.
Fire fighters have not been able to reach the centre of the fire.
They prevented the fire to reach to the New Empire building which is located beside the Citi Mart.
