Kolkata: BJP protests in front of Eden Gardens for removal of portraits of Pak players from Club House
Kolkata, Feb 23 (UNI) BJP today staged a protest demonstration in front of Eden Gardens demanding removal of portraits of Pakistani cricketers, including that of Pak President Imran Khan, from the iconic stadium in view of Pakistan aided terror attack on the CRPF personnel at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir on Feb 14.
Air rented with "Bande Mataram" slogans as scores of BJP's youth wing activists carrying festoons " shame on Pakistan and down down Imran Khan" marched towards the front gate of the stadium where Kolkata Police cordoned off the club house and prevented them from going inside.
A scuffle ensued between the uniformed people and the protesters, who wanted
to get inside and submit a memorandum to Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB)
President Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian skipper.
Police also detained some protesters for creating disturbance in the public.
The demonstration happened a day after BJP state president Dilip Ghosh
demanded removal of portraits of Pakistani cricketers, saying it was inappropriate now to keep those photographs at the famous stadium, who are instigating the perpetrators in Pakistan to attack the Indians.
Ghosh said after the horrific Pulwama attack on the Indian defence personnel,
Indians have been angry and united and Mohali stadium removed all the pictures of Pakistani players in protest.
" If they can do why not us in Bengal to remove the pictures of Pak PM Imran
Khan, Ramiz Raja and Washim Akram," asked BJP chief Dilip Ghosh.
“There is no need to keep pictures of Pakistani players, including Imran Khan,
at the Eden. This has been done because people are angry over the Pulwama
attack. There are some pictures of Pakistani players at Eden Gardens and
people have raised objections to it." State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said.
Ghosh also urged the Cricket Association of Bengal and the Bengal government to remove all the Pakistani's former and present pictures from Eden Gardens or else the Yuba Morcha of is party would take to the streets.
" If the authorities do not remove those Pakistani cricketers pictures then
the Yuba Morcha to launch the agitation in the streets," threatened the BJP
chief.
Ghosh's demand was happened three days after CAB President Sourav
Ganguly opined that Indian should sever all the sporing ties with Pakistan after
the Pulwama attack on February 14.
After Pulwama massacre on CRPF personnel by the terrorists. the Karnataka State Cricket Association removed photographs of Pakistani cricketers from Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
The Cricket Club of India at its Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai covered a
photograph of Khan and pictures of other Pakistan players were removed
from stadiums in Mohali, Jaipur and Dharamsala.
