Kolkata: BJP protests demanding reopening of Majherhat bridge, Mamata blames Centre for delay

Kolkata/IBNS: Holding a protest at Taratala in Trinamool Congress' stronghold south Kolkata, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday demanded the reopening of Majherhat Bridge which had collapsed in September 2018.

The protest was led by BJP national secretary Kailash Vjayvargiya.

Police, which denied permission for the protest to take place, got engaged in a heated exchange with the agitators and also arrested a few of them.

Vijayvargiya, who has claimed to have been arrested, said, "People can't even protest in West Bengal. The democracy has been murdered here. We are fighting for the restoration of democracy."

However, police said the BJP leader was not arrested.

'All for photo-op': Mamata Banerjee

In an all-out attack on the BJP, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has blamed the Railways, which is run by the central government, for the delay in reopening.

"The Railways has caused the delay in reopening. Where was the BJP then? The central government has delayed the reopening by one year," said Banerjee during her press conference in state headquarters Nabanna.

"The outsiders are doing these dramas only for photo-ops," the CM said, in an indirect attack on Vijayvargiya.

Majherhat bridge, which had collapsed claiming three lives and injured 20 odd people, is expected to be reopened within a few months.
