Kerry's India visit is start of an imp relationship with a new govt: US govt
Washington, Aug 5 (IBNS): The Barack Obama administration in the United States has called US Secretary of State John Kerry's visit to India "a beginning of an important relationship with a new government."
Speaking about the meeting State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki told media person on Monday: "Well, I think, one, it was the highest-level visit of a member of the Obama Administration to India since Prime Minister Modi was inaugurated."
"In addition to the strategic dialogue, he did have a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister, and it was the Prime Minister’s first cabinet-level meeting with a U.S. official. And discussions during that meeting covered a wide range of topics with considerable focus, in large part, on Mr. Modi’s economic vision, how the United States can help to advance that vision, including through support to the energy sector and through clean energy initiatives," he said.
"There was also significant discussion of the WTO, with the Secretary reiterating our position that unraveling the Bali Accord was not in India’s interests and was not in keeping with Mr. Modi’s vision of opening the economy. They also discussed Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as India’s Look East policy," Psaki said.
"So I would hardly see this visit as an ending or a conclusive visit as much as a beginning of an important relationship with a new government and one that has great strategic value to the United States," said he.
Secretary of State John F. Kerry and External Affairs Minister of India Sushma Swaraj last week led their respective delegations to the fifth annual India-U.S. Strategic Dialogue where both the leaders committed to intensify efforts to combat terrorism.
Kerry also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to India.
He was accompanied by Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzeker.
