Keriwal slashes power tariff by 50 pc, offers free water

New Delhi, Feb 25 (IBNS) In keeping with the Aam Aadmi Party's pre-poll promises, the Arvind Kerjwal government on Wednesday slashed power tariff by 50 per cent for consumption up to 400 units per month and introduced a free water scheme for residents of Delhi.

He said every household will get 20,000 litres of  water at no cost every month. Families using  less than 400 units of power per month will get a 50 per cent  discount on their bills, while the others will pay full rate for electricity. 

The new prices will come into effect on March 1.

For the next fiscal year, The subsidy for electricity is likely to cost the government about Rs. 1,400 crore and the discount on water will cost another Rs. 250 crore, Sisodia said.

In its manifesto before the Delhi assembly elections, AAP had promised to cut power tariff by 50 per cent immediately after coming to power. It said the rates will be revised based on the findings of an CAG audit.
