Kerala flood leaves nearly 50 dead, PM Modi assures state of central aid

Kochi, Aug 15 (IBNS): Heavy rains continue to create havoc in the state of Kerala taking the death toll to 47 on Wednesday, media reports said.

To combat with the situation, the state has opened 35 of its 39 dams.

Meanwhile, operations at Cochin International Airport have been suspended till 2 pm on Saturday due to flooding in and around the airport.

The state has sounded a red alert in 12 districts.

Schools have been asked to remain shut in the flood affected areas.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan earlier called an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation.

Red alert has been issued for Ernakulam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasargod, Thrissur, Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta districts.

State CM Pinarayi Vijayan also spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh over phone.

He informed them about the intense flood situation.

PM Modi has assured the assistance of Centre in handling the situation.

All the rivers in the state are presently overflowing and all the dams are also releasing water.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor also visited the flood affected areas.
