The arrest of the accused comes after massive protests by locals rocked Kulgam on Tuesday, demanding strict action against the culprits.

A police official said that the girl had gone to Akhal area in Kulgam to attend a marriage function, where two youths kidnapped her.

"The accused, identified as Adil Dar and Wasim Dar, took her to an orchard and raped her,” he said, adding the girl was also physically assaulted.

He said the girl was found by locals in an unconscious state. “She was immediately taken to a local hospital from where she was referred to a hospital in Srinagar in a critical condition,” he said.

He said a Case FIR No.116/2020 U/S 341,366,376/511,354,323 IPC was immediately registered in Police Station Devsar and the accused were arrested.

"Chargesheet will be produced before court well in time," he said, adding the general public are requested not to pay heed to rumours.

The relatives of the girl and other villagers staged a protest and blocked Kulgam-Yaripora road on Tuesday, demanding death penalty for the culprits.
