Kashmir shuts on Afzal Guru Death Anniversary

Srinagar, Feb 9 (IBNS) : Authorities on Thursday put severe restrictions on the movement of people in various parts of the Kashmir valley witnessing a complete shutdown on the occasion of the fourth death anniversary of Parliament-attack convict Afzal Guru.

Afzal Guru was executed by hanging under secrecy on Feb 9, 2013 at Tihar Jail in Delhi. He was later buried inside the jail premises.

According to sources, all the separatist leaders have been  detained or put under house arrest and restrictions have been put in place in Srinagar.

Curfew-like restrictions have been imposed in the old city and Maisuma police station areas.

Sources said that restrictions under Section 144 Cr P C have been imposed in these areas to maintain  law and order.

JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik, Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani were put under house arrest to prevent them from staging any protests.

A massive deployment of  police and the paramilitary forces has been made in various areas of old Srinagar.

Barricades have been put on different roads with security forces being on guard.

All shops and business establishments are closed in response to a strike call of the separatist leaders.

The strike has been called by the Joint Hurriyat Leadership  to mourn the death of Guru.
