Karnataka: Students asked to remove hijab before entering a school campus in Mandya

Mandya: An argument broke out between a teacher and guardians as students were asked to enter a school campus after removing their hijab (a head scarf worn by Muslim girls) in Karnataka's Mandya region, media reports said on Monday.

The incident reportedly occured in Rotary School of the city.

A video of the incident was posted by Indian news agency ANI on Twitter.

Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao described the incident as 'unfortunate'.

"Most unfortunate scenes in front of schools of Karnataka. I hope the High Court understands the situation in its entirety and takes a sensible decision. This is not the intolerant India we want," he tweeted.

The Karnataka government shut down all schools, colleges, and all educational institutions as the row over hijab spread across the state.

Schools for classes 1-10 reopened in the state on Monday.
