JU: Students remember one-month of police crackdown
Triggering criticisms, JU vice-chancellor Abhijit Chakraborty on Sept 16 had called the police to remove protesting students of the university from the main administrative building in the campus. The police had cracked down on agitating protesters and arrested 37 students that night.
Students on Thursday started a convention as they were seen wearing black badges in the campus.
At 1 pm, members of Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA) took part in a protest march inside the campus.
The students n the evening organized a torch march which started from JU campus and ended at Dhakuria area in south Kolkata.
The agitating students have started a 24-hour-long token hunger strike and peaceful cultural demonstration in front of the main administrative building of JU, Arabinda Bhaban, to mark the one-month of police crackdown on them. The students will screen the video of police crackdown of last month on the wee hours of Friday.
After completing the hunger strike, the three faculties' (Science, Arts and Engineering) general bodies will discuss the continuation of their class-boycotts and the next steps of their movement.
"We are currently sitting on a token hunger strike for 24 hours to protest against the police brutality that had occurred last month on this day," a protesting student of the University Arnab Chakraborty told IBNS.
The vice-chancellor did not come to the institute on Thursday.
