New Delhi, July 12 (UNI): The Union government on Friday said Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) of Delhi was a very good institution and it would not be allowed to stay away from the mainstream of the nation.

"JNU is at the peak in the field of research. This is a very good institution. We will run this university very well. Due to some people, it will not be allowed to be defamed. There is no question of this university being away from the mainstream of the nation," Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' said in the Lok Sabha while replying to the debate on the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2019.

The minister was responding to the issue raised by BJP member S.P. Singh Baghel. The BJP lawmaker while participating in the debate said that many central universities can be established by the government but it should be ensured that they do not become "second JNU". He said that such students should not be admitted to these universities who allegedly follow "anti-national" ideology.
