J&K: 10 soldiers missing in Siachen avalanche

Leh, Feb 3 (IBNS) Ten soldiers, including one senior officer, are missing as a massive avalanche hit the northern base camp of the Indian Army at the Siachen glacier in Jammu Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.

“Ten Army soldiers, including an JCO officer, are  missing after  massive avalanche struck Northern Glacier sector in Ladakh region of  Indian Army post located at a height of 19600 feet”, Colonel S.D. Goswami, spokesman of Army's Udhampur headquartered northern command, told IBNS  here.

“A massive rescue operation by specialized teams from Army, Air Force and rescue dogs also have been pressed into service to rescue the soldiers.The rescue operations are being closely monitored from Leh and Udhampur," Goswami said.

“It is very difficult for us to get updates very fast from the avalanche area, if we get some latest, media will be informed about the development(s) ”, he added.

Last month, four Indian soldiers on foot patrol were killed by an avalanche in the same region.
