Srinagar/UNI: Property worth crores of rupees was damaged in a devastating fire in Maisuma area of the city on Sunday, official sources said.

They said fire broke out in a shop at Maisuma early Sunday morning. However, it spread to adjoining areas before the fire tenders could reach the spot.

Six shops were damaged before fire could be brought under control, they said, adding the cause was being ascertained.

Police have registered a case and initiated proceedings.

Meanwhile, the market committee and affected shopkeepers demanded property compensation and said for the past more than a year they have suffered huge losses due to restrictions after August 5 and now lockdown imposed in view of COVID-19 pandemic.
