Srinagar: Security forces gunned down four militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Tobia (LeT) in twin encounters that erupted in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, official sources said on Wednesday.

The first gun fight rages at village Drach on Tuesday night and the second erupted in village Moolu in the same district of South Kashmir early Wednesday during a cordon and search operation following an input about the presence of militants.

The Gun battles erupted at a time when union Home Minister Amit Shah was on a three day visit to Jammu and Kashmir beginning on Tuesday.

The Home Minister arrived in Srinagar Tuesday night after addressing a public rally at Rajouri and is scheduled to address another public meeting in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday.

"Three local terrorists linked with proscribed terror outfit JeM killed in an encounter at Drach Shopian”, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said.

"The two of the three militants identified as Hanan Bin Yaqoob and Jamshed were involved in recent killing of a Special Police Officer (SPO) Javed Dar at Pinglana on October 2, 2022 and an outside labourer from West Bengal on August 24, 2022 in Pulwama,” ADGP added.

One local unidentified militant of LeT was killed in the Moolu encounter that erupted early today in the same district.

The operation is going on. Further details shall follow, police said.
