Srinagar/IBNS: An encounter broke out between security forces and suspected terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar city since Monday, officials said on Tuesday.

The police and CRPF launched the joint operation.

"#Encounter has started at #Kanemazar #Nawakadal area of #Srinagar. JKP and CRPF are on the job. Further details shall follow. @JmuKmrPolice," Kashmir Zone Police tweeted.

According to reports, the encounter is still going on.

A police official said that following special information about presence of militants, a joint CASO was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of J&K police and CRPF at around 0200 hrs on Tuesday at densely populated Kanemazar area in Nawakadal, Srinagar.

He said when security forces were moving towards the target house, militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons.

"Security forces retaliated ensuing in an encounter," he said.

The police official said that additional security forces have been rushed to further cordon off the area to foil any attempts by militants to escape.

"'The encounter was going on when the reports last came in," he added.

Sources said that mobile internet service has been suspended in Srinagar for security reasons.
