Jaitley slams media over invasion of privacy
New Delhi, Jan 18 (IBNS): Union Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday slammed the media for invading into the privacy of individuals and also for running media trials.
"Privacy of individuals must be respected. Relation between husband and wife type of relation must be carefully reported. Parallel media trial must be avoided high profile cases where media suppose guilt before trial must end. Media must not impact court trials," Jaitley said.
The comments are especially significant as Congress MP Shashi Tharoor had recently hit out at the media for being prosecutor, judge and jury in his wife Sunanda Pushkar death case.
Jaitley said, "It's not to put a blanket ban on these matters but some trial courts are under tremendous pressure when it's a high profile case."
Speaking about government regulation over media, he said, "The media has the responsibility to be fair and maintain the biggest standard of integrity. Reporting during insurgency is critical. Compare 9/11 vs 26/11, Pakistan handlers were being told about the location of security forces. There should be regulation regarding this and this is something the government is serious considering."
