Jairam Ramesh lauds Modi's call to set up more toilets
New Delhi, Aug 18 (IBNS): Former Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Monday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to build up more toilets across India.
"Building toilets is a collective endeavour. I am glad Prime Minister spoke on it," Ramesh told CNN-IBN channel.
He also praised women who stood up for themselves and left their in-law's home due to lack of toilets.
In his maiden Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday focussed on setting up more toilets across the country - unconventionally taking up the issue of cleanliness among all Indians on the occasion.
Modi urged parliamentarians to use constituency funds to build toilets in every school.
“Can we not create proper toilet facilities? I don’t know whether people will appreciate my talking about dirt and toilets from the Red Fort but I come from a poor family. I have seen poverty and the attempt to give dignity to the poor starts from there,” he said.
The PM also appealed to corporates to join hands with the government as a part of their social responsibility to build toilets.
“There should be separate toilets for girls. Next year when we stand here, every school should have toilets for girls and boys… If 125 crore people resolve not to dirty our surroundings, no force on earth can come and dirty our country,” he said emphasising on ‘clean India’.
