It is a matter of shame: Nirmala Sitharaman attacks Rahul Gandhi over his 'rape remark'

New Delhi/IBNS: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday attacked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his "Rape in India" comment and described it as 'horrendous'.

"It is a matter of shame that a senior leader of Congress party speaks by forgetting the dignity of the women," she said.

Rahul Gandhi on Friday hit back at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which demanded an apology from the Congress MP over his "Rape in India" remark, saying Narendra Modi should apologise pulling out an old clip where the Prime Minister is seen calling Delhi a "rape capital" when he was in the Opposition.

In the clip, Modi, who was then Gujarat Chief Minister, is heard saying, "It is because of the way the government turned Delhi into a rape capital, India is getting disrespected across the world. The government has no scheme, no will power to save the dignity of women. On the flip side, they are accusing the Opposition leaders of wrong doings which are false."

The video has been tweeted by Rahul saying, "Modi should apologise. 1. For burning the North East. 2. For destroying India’s economy. 3. For this speech, a clip of which I'm attaching."

Rahul, who was at an election campaign in Jharkhand on Thursday, said, "Narendra Modi used to say Make in India. But it is Rape in India all over. Everyday in newspapers, some news or the other about rape comes out."

Training his guns at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul had said, "Narendra Modi remains silent when his own MLAs rape women. He said Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (save girls and educate them) but he didn't say from whom to save."

Tearing apart the Wayand MP, the BJP women MPs protested against the "Rape in India" remark and also demanded an apology from Rahul.

The protest against the former Congress president was led by Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani who had snatched the Congress bastion Amethi from Rahul in the 2019 General Elections.
