Iran allows India, four other ‘friendly nations’ access to Strait of Hormuz amid West Asia conflict

Tehran/New Delhi/IBNS: Iran has opened the strategic Strait of Hormuz for five friendly nations, including India, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, media reports said.

The Consulate General of Iran in Mumbai shared the announcement on X, quoting Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The other countries granted access are China, Russia, Iraq, and Pakistan.

The move comes after António Guterres urged the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the conflict in the Middle East is worsening civilian suffering and global economic instability.

“The conflict in the Middle East has gone too far… It’s high time to end the war,” Guterres said, calling on Iran to cease attacks on neighboring countries not involved in the conflict.

Meanwhile, Iran's ambassador to New Delhi, Mohammad Fathali on Wednesday said the country believes India can play an effective role in easing West Asia tensions caused by the US-Israel attack on Tehran.

Fathali noted that India’s balanced foreign policy and strong ties with all parties involved in the US-Israel-Iran conflict position it as a credible mediator.

“India can certainly play an effective and positive role in reducing tensions. As a major actor in the Global South, India holds a special position to help de-escalate tensions and facilitate dialogue,” he told NDTV.

He added that India’s historical and strategic relations with all sides enable it to act as a trusted player in reducing misunderstandings and strengthening diplomatic channels.
