Bareilly/IBNS: Bareilly has been kept on high alert with the suspension of internet and deployment of security personnel in the city that witnessed violence over the "I Love Muhammad" remark row, media reports said.

The city has been kept on high alert amid the simmering tension ahead of the Friday prayers in mosques this evening.

Internet services have been suspended till 3 pm on Saturday.

The clampdown on the internet was enforced from Thursday to avoid any further escalation in view of Dussehra celebrations.

Authorities said the internet suspension was aimed at preventing spreading of rumours that may trigger communal tension.

Tauqeer Raza, a local cleric in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly, had given a call for protest with the "I love Mohammad" campaign causing tension in the city.

A large number of people had gathered close to Bareilly's Islamia ground following Friday's prayer, over the call to raise voices and submit a memorandum in connection with an FIR lodged in Kanpur after a tent with an 'I Love Muhammad' poster was removed earlier this month.

The crowd allegedly raised objectionable slogans and pelted stones at the police, causing tension in the area.

The police had resorted to lathi charge to control the situation.

Eighty-one people including the cleric were arrested.

According to reports, the 'I Love Muhammad' controversy erupted on September 4 during a Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi procession in Kanpur.

A tent with the poster was put in the way of the procession.
