International Women’s Day: All woman crew operates flights, trains in Tamil Nadu

Chennai/UNI: The woman power came to the forefront on the occasion of International Women's Day with all women crew operating flights and trains in an effort to ensure gender equality at work place.

A day after Southern Railway operated a special EMU train between Moore Market Complex and Tiruvallur with an eight member all women crew, the doube-decker Coimbatore-Bengaluru UDAY Express, coming under the Salem division, was operated today by the all-women crew to mark the occasion.

The double-decker train was operated by H Nimmy, Locopilot, and B J Sindhu, Assistant Locopilot with S Mareena as the guard and a five-member ticket checking team led by Chief Travelling Ticket Inspector P R Savithri part of the crew.

Senior railway officials congratulated the women's team at Coimbatore while flagging off the train.

Ms Sapna Soni, Station Manager of Magnasite Junction railway station, who flagged off the train st Salem, said it was a moment of pride and a great day for women and the entire women staff of the division.

Ms Nimmy, who is the only woman Locopilot in the Division, it turned out to be a historic occasion as she operated an Express train for the first time in her seven-year-long career in Railways.

''I have been working as a Locopilot for 10 months. I usually operate goods trains and this is the first time I operated an Express train, clocking a speed of 105 km/hr," she added.

On the air front, an all women crew operated an Air India flight from Chennai to New Delhi today with Capt Aarti Kurne and Capt B K Prithika as pilots and Meenakshi Kuntal, Arora Neena N B, Peer Geetha N B, Rashmi Surana and Priyanka Hirekhan as the cabin crew.

The Chennai-Coimbatore-Chennai Air India flight too was operated by all women crew in both the directions with Capt Sonia Rani jain and Vrinda Nair and the cabin crew comprising of Karishma, Sarita, Zena, Maya and J Chetna.

Meanwhile, a series of programmes were hosted across Tamil Nadu to mark the International Women's day.
