India's economic mismanagement to destroy millions of families: Rahul Gandhi

In a renewed attack on the Narendra Modi government, Rahul tweeted: "India's economic mismanagement is a tragedy that is going to destroy millions of families. It will no longer be accepted silently" and added the hashtag "#BJPsDistractAndRule".

He supplemented the post with a screenshot of economic data related to household income during the anti-coronavirus lockdown.

The Congress Parliamentarian highlighted three points from the data, those being: "8 in 10 Indian households lost income", "Rural households worse hit than urban ones" and "First time in decades, extreme poverty could see reverse trend".

According to the data, "lower middle class had been badly hit (by the lockdown)" while 84 per cent of households (and 88 per cent of rural households) had reported either reduction or loss of income.

Raising an alarm, the data warned that a 10 per cent contraction in global GDP would push over 170 million people to "extreme poverty."

It also predicted that India will make up "almost half the estimated additional poor regardless of contraction scenario."

Rahul had earlier called on the government to immediately provide Rs 10,000 in cash support for poorer sections of the society and an economic stimulus package for the MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises).

The government in May announced a Rs 20 lakh crore special economic package to make India self-reliant.

In response to the announcement, Rahul had warned that a "catastrophic problem" could arise if hard cash was not provided to those who were badly hit by the lockdown.
