Indian Navy to deploy 2 women officers in warships for the first time

New Delhi/IBNS: In a first, the Indian Navy has deployed two women officers--Sub Lieutenant Kumudini Tyagi and Sub Lieutenant Riti Singh--on Navy warships as part of the crew.

Though the Indian Navy does employ women officers in its ranks, so far women have not been deployed for long periods on warships due to several reasons including lack of privacy in crew quarters and availability of gender-specific toilet and bathroom facilities, said an NDTV report.

The two women officers are currently training a host of sensors onboard Navy multi-role helicopter, including sonar consoles and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) payloads, the report said, adding that they will eventually fly on the Navy's new MH-60 R helicopters.

The report said it has emerged the Indian Air Force (IAF) has shortlisted a woman fighter pilot to include in its fleet of Rafale fighter jets.

The operational conversion of this officer has begun, the report informed, adding that it's not clear when she would be declared 'operational'.
