Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reaches Dhaka, holds bilateral talks with Bangladeshi counterpart amid strained ties

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Monday visited Dhaka amid the strained relationship between the neighbouring nations and met his Bangladesh counterpart Md Jashim Uddin, media reports said.

This is the first such delegation-level talks held between the officials of the two countries since Sheikh Hasina exited Bangladesh amid violent protests against her regime on August 5.

The details of the meeting are still not known.

Key issues on the agenda include trade, visa policies, connectivity, border killings, water-sharing, and other matters of mutual interest, reported The Daily Star.

The Indian official is likely to attend a luncheon and hold courtesy calls with Bangladesh's Interim Government Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus and Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain.

He is also scheduled to meet Yunus later in the day.

He is visiting the country at a time when Bangladesh has been witnessing continuous attacks on Hindus ever since the Hasina-led government collapsed.

The communal tension allegedly increased during the current regime after Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested in Chittagong over sedition charges.

Earlier, India said the interim government in Bangladesh must shoulder its responsibility of protecting all minorities while expressing serious concern over the "surge" of extremist rhetoric and increasing incidents of violence against Hindus.
