India joins Trump’s Board of Peace meet as 'observer' : Reports
India participated as an observer in U.S. President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace meeting on Gaza held in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, according to media reports.
As per the official attendee list released by the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace, India was represented at the high-level gathering by Namgya Khampa, Chargé d’affaires at the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC, ABP News reported.
Reports indicate that India has not formally signed on to the Board of Peace.
Last week, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a press briefing, “We have received an invitation from the US side to join the Board of Peace. We are currently examining the proposal.”
He added, “India has consistently supported efforts aimed at promoting peace, stability and dialogue in West Asia. Our Prime Minister has welcomed initiatives that provide a pathway towards long-term and sustainable peace in the region, including Gaza.”
During the meeting, Trump said board members had committed USD 7 billion for Gaza’s reconstruction, according to media reports. The US president also pledged an additional USD 10 billion, though without specifying its allocation, DW reported.
Trump reportedly stated that Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Kuwait had offered to fund the Board of Peace package for Gaza.
“Every dollar spent is an investment in stability and the hope of a new and harmonious region,” the US president was quoted as saying by DW. “The Board of Peace is showing how a better future can be built, starting right here in this room,” he added.
